Kleptomania is one of the eldest clinical diagnoses and can be traced back for over 200 years. However it is unexciting as only 1 out of 20 shoplifters are Kleptomaniacs. Kleptomania is a strong desire to steal objects. Often a kleptomaniac steals things he could have bought easily or things that are not at all expensive. The person steals just for the tension and recognizes that this behavior is wrong but cannot resist carrying it out. The Kleptomaniac could generally purchase the object, and after stealing they sometimes even give it away. They feel a release of tension that has been building inside them after stealing an object therefore Kleptomanic's sometimes secretly replace the object after stealing it as they don't want to get caught.
People often have the idea that Kleptomaniac's are people who steal everything. This is not true. Normally people who steal take something because it is worth money or it is useful...
