"War is Hell"
With glory and expression, Walt Whitman exposes the true meaning of war in his poem "The Wound Dresser". "It's a dreadful thing no man or woman should ever have to face", stated William Tecumseh Sherman, "War is Hell". As dreadful as it may be, war of all types is an on-going crisis that we as citizens have plagued our countries with for many years.
Whitman speaks passionately about the helpless soldiers lying in hospital beds hurting and dying. "Hard the breathing rattles, quite glazed already the eye, yet life struggles hard (Come sweet death! Be persuaded O beautiful death! In mercy come quickly.)". Heroes lie there alone with the harsh realization that war had distorted them from once being a brave soldier, and killed many of his brothers before his blood filled eyes. The smell of death and blood filled the air that was already polluted by gunpowder...
