From Marcus Garvey to Malcolm X, African- American religion has played an important part in American culture and society. "The story of African-American religion is a tale of variety and creative fusion" (Maffly-Kipp, 2001, 1). Most people consider African-American religions to be limited to the old traditional African religions of Animism and Tribal religions. African-American religion is so much more and it incorporates many races not just those of African descent.
To better understand African-American religion one must understand its past. African-American religion dates back to the fifteenth century when enslaved Africans were brought over to America. At that time there were a large number of religious practices and beliefs that reflected the many cultures and groups that Africans had come from. Although there were many religious traditions, Islam had shown to be a powerful force in Africa before the start of slavery.
Islam, which is submission and obedience to the Order of Allah and His Messenger with love, hope and fear, ranks second to Christianity in the world. "An estimated 20 percent of enslaved people were practicing Muslims" (Maffly-Kipp, 2001, 1)...
