Aldehydes and Ketones are important structures used in many syntheses. This set of syntheses was aimed to add a carbon between the carbon-oxygen double bond and the first (alpha) substituent of the ketone. This carbon chain lengthening synthesis was based upon using carbons bearing a Benzotriazole (Bt). This compound was used, because just as OTs it is a good leaving group. The Bt would be present and a stabilizing force during the intermediary step. The Bt would later be expelled during the reformation of the ketone. The implementation of the Bt used an organolithium (n-BuLi) in solution with either THF or 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane.
