Queen's University is planning to drop the standards for admissions among the Aboriginals to have an equal proportion of Aboriginal applicants compare to non-Aboriginal applicants. This new policy is to waive the minimum entry average mark of 85% for 10 aboriginal applicants to its undergraduate art and science degree. The main purpose is to improve the participation rate of Aboriginal towards post-secondary education. According to Statistic Canada, documents showed that nearly half of the Aboriginal students leave school before completing their secondary school education. Queen's University sees this program as recognition to the Aboriginal society by demonstrating their concern in their education and their well being through the mean of alternative admissions. Unfortunately, the respond from the Aboriginal people was repugnance. They perceived this new policy as a form of racism and believed that there are alternative ways to support them in boosting up their education level so as to reach the required minimum entry mark. They do not see this special consideration as recognition of their well being but seen as a benefit from affirmative action. Richard Vedan, director of the University of British Columbia First Nations House of Learning, firmly believe that the level of education directly shapes the quality of life, quality of health, as well as socio-economic standing.
