In 1994 the world was shocked to hear about the atrocities that were going on in Rwanda. The direct cause of the mishap has been said to have began with the shooting down of Rwandan and Burundian peasants. In truth, the conflict began long before the with the ruthless and exploitative attitude of King Leopold towards his colony.
During the course towards this horrible event many different occurrence came about, but none of them were beneficial to the Rwandan people. First of all, the UN peace keepers were not allowed to intervene in the conflict, so the were forced to stand by and watch the relentless slaughter of the Rwandans. French and Belgian troops were sent into Rwanda to rescue their citizens along with American citizens. No Rwandans were rescued. Groups of soldiers who were protecting a school full of refugees were ordered to pull back to the airport. Many of the people they were protecting died after they left. In a matter of days the UN security council voted to removed the majority of their forces, reducing their numbers from 2500 to 270...
