The characters' attitudes to truth and lies
1. Scobie: - always tells truth at first: v. important for him => people don't like him because he is irreproachable : "You're a terrible fellow, Scobie. Scobie the Just." (p.18), "You are too damned honest to live" (Wilson to Scobie, p.132) so they invent tales about him : "Do you know the latest story they are using against you at the Secretariat? () you sleep with black girls." (p.17)
- he evolves during the book => ends up by lying :
