Mario Brothers, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Go CartingThese are all common video games that children used to play. Monty Python, Crypt Killer and Unreal Tournament, Doomare the names of a few of the latest video games that children now play. Games have changed drastically over the past seven years; they went from cute and fun characters in which the goal of the game is to save the princess, to violent killing sprees for no reason at all. Games have also become a lot longer to finish and to beat, and have gotten quite addictive--no more levels, just playing for hours at a time in the ultimate goal of killing the whole city. Video games have evolved from a harmless pastime to a danger in today's youth and today's society.
Columbine High, the horrible tragedy of two teens killing so many fellow students and teachers has many researchers linking the violent outburst to the violence of today's video games. Time magazine said, "video games like Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct and Doom, the very game played obsessively by the two young men who ended so many lives in Littleton, make our children more active participants in simulated violence." It is also proven that because of the realistic simulations of gun control, the teens that play these games have acquired a specific skill with guns. The games desensitize the younger players, such as the 8-12 year olds to the moral implications that are behind killing. Statistics show that bullying in the schoolyard has also been linked to these types of video games...
