Doctor Faustus
Faustus, the major character in Christopher Marlowe's play, Dr. Faustus
represents a clash between the sixteenth century and the Renaissance era. During the middle ages and early Renaissance the main focus was on Christianity and G-d. Most writings were written about the almighty and saints, rather than ordinary people. Marlowe goes against the common writing model and instead portrays Faustus as the ideal Renaissance man who embodies the spirit of the era. He rejects G-d's authority and allows his thirst for knowledge and control over nature to take over. Marlowe uses Faustus as an example to show that those who reach too high will ultimately suffer the consequences. As a result, Faustus' Renaissance actions lead to his medieval fall.
