Writing Assignment 1
The gentlemen of the colonial Virginian times are the most interesting to me because they are the elite of the society. Certainly, these men in this society of the New World were the wealthy citizens who had control of everything and used that power to their advantage. Without a doubt, this group of men has the easiest, most well established life out of anyone. I will discuss the polished gentilities of their elaborate homes, their flamboyant clothes, and their exceptional diet compared to the lower classes.
I want to begin with the clothes, which defined the status of the gentlemen of the colonial period. Lace-ruffled shirts capped off with a periwig showed the lack of manual work from this particular class. Whereas the working classes had only two shirts made from the coarsest of materials. Similarly, the slaves had barely enough clothes to cover them and only received shoes in the wintertime...
