Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the second of three sons. Alexander Bell began reading and writing at a very young age. Bell family stories told of his insistence of mailing a letter to a family friend long before he had any understanding of the alphabet. Alexander always wanted to apply his knowledge to work. As he grew up, Alexander showed what came to be known as a Bell family trademark, an "expressive, flexible, and resonant speaking voice."
His father, Alexander Melville Bell, was a scientist and author of vocal physiology and elocution. Melville's dedicated interest in speech pathologies was made stronger when he found himself falling in love with a deaf woman, named Eliza, who he married.
Eliza Grace Symonds, a painter and sculptor, was nearly ten years older than Melville. Even though she was older, her lovable temper and sophisticated intelligence were more than enough to get his lifelong love and affection...
