"Custom, then, is the great guide of human life," wrote Scottish philosopher David Hume. Each society has its own customs, in which there should be a specific guideline to maintain the relationship between people, and it is known as manners. According to William H. Robinson, "Manners and good behavior will carry you through the world." (137) Having good manners and be respectful are necessary for maintaining good relationships between each of us. They are the weapons to eliminate enemies and resentments. Carol Tavris gives a good generalization that "good manners melt resentment because they maintain respect between the two disagreeing parties." (Tavris, Carol 68) I strongly agree with her idea. Her example, "Someone steps on your toe, you feel angry, the person apologizes, your anger vanishes. Your toe may still hurt, but your dignity is intact" exactly shows how manners work in relieving anger...
