In the Gospel of Mark, bias is shown just as it is in any piece of writing. Many writers consider one of the biggest obstacles to effective writing to be eliminating that bias, which can taint a work and, at times, alienate the writer's intended audience. Mark's particular bias seems to bent on portraying Jesus as a figure who did much of his ministry on his own merit. Mark does not try to make the reader think that great supporting characters surrounded Jesus. The Gospel According to Mark was written with the intention of undermining the authority of Peter, the disciples, and the family of Jesus.
Peter, although well known as a flawed individual, at times appears to be attacked in the Gospel of Mark. Mark quotes Jesus as scolding Peter. Jesus goes so far as to liken Peter to Satan (Mk 8:33). The direct quote from Jesus using such strong words is interesting on the part of Mark, considering the time gap between the actual event and the time the gospel was written.
