The influence of television on students has been a continuing debate for years about the effect television has had on student learning and behavior. Television has been referred to as the "first curriculum" because it appears to affect the way children develop their learning skills. Because watching television requires little effort, educators have been faced with the tremendous challenge in maintaining students interest and motivation in schoolwork.
Although there is no conclusive data to determine how much the media affect our youth and whether these effects are positive or negative, we do know that all types of media from television to music stimulate and influence the socialization of youth.
With the technology boom and the Internet, analysts have begun to examine the changes that may be occurring in youth grown up in a digital, interactive video and Internet environment. Some analysts believe that the interactive participation with computers rather than passive viewing will produce a generation which will increasingly question the value of information and will therefore force children to use critical thinking.
With the emergence of digital media educators have identified important questions that need to be addressed if the use of technology is to be a positive force in a child's educational development.
Some of the concerns to be determined are:
1. How can the unique characteristics of new interactive technologies be integrated with the child's development?
