RAM stands for random access memory. This means that information can be retrieved or stored in any order. The data that is processed by your CPU comes from RAM. The data is taken from another storage device such as a hard drive, CD, floppy, etc. then stored in RAM before it goes to the CPU. RAM can be read and written too much faster than these higher capacity storage devices which make data processing much faster. Similar to a microprocessor RAM consists of memory chips which are integrated circuits with millions of transistors and capacitors.[CMU] A transistor and a capacitor are paired to create a memory cell, which represents a single bit of data.
