A Con Gone Wrong Being a con man in the late 1800’s in the heart of New York City was risky business. Jacob Dwebbs thrived on the danger and excitement of living life on the edge. He never knew what he would do when the sun came up. The life of a con had its downside too though. Jake never knew when exactly his next meal would be, or if he would have enough money to stay in a hotel for the night. But his good looks and charming personality got him quite a few freebies. (And out of a few jams too.) Jake really was sly as a fox. He was currently working on the biggest scheme of all time. He had met a widow at a ball a few weeks ago and had been worming his way into her life since. Tonight he was going to her house for dinner. Jake figured he’d use the time to search her house and look for the valuables. He was surprised at how easily this was going along. Not worried at all though, he’d never been caught before. If it all went as planned she’d be like putty in his hands by the end of the month and he’d be controlling her every move; just the way women needed to be handled in his opinion. Jake’s thoughts were stopped when he reached the end of the road and found the house. And boy was it a grand one. At least 4 floors and 20 windows on each floor. The richness of it all! He was practically drooling just thinking about it. Still, he must hold together and so he knocked. The door opened and a butler said, “Mr. Jacob, I presume.” “Yes,” Jake answered. The butler stepped aside to let him in to the foyer. (Which was large enough to be a ballroom.) He stood in the middle of the room and tried to act casual while his eyes ate up all the expensive things. “Ah, Jacob. There you are. We’ve been expecting you.” Jake turned around when he heard the voice coming from behind him. Mrs.
