Dating is a term with many meanings. There are the teen or the adult meanings, then there would be the religious meanings. Starting off with the teen and the adult meanings, I would have to say that dating is only a word. It is never acted out the way written on paper. Meaning, the definition might say that dating means to go out socially with another person, often out of a romantic interest, but on that "date" nothing romantic happens.
A teenager, such as myself, might say that a date would be a gathering of friends, whether it's a group of females, males, or both, going out just to have a good time. If the teen chooses to give that "date" another meaning and have a romantic time, then so be it. On the other hand, an adult might consider a date as a romantic evening out with a spouse of some gender and everything is perfect. The place being nice and the dinner being good and paid for by the male or female, in some cases. It all depends on the person...
