Performing in front of an audience can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things that I have ever had to do was learn a Grade VI solo composition for double bass. I was going to perform this piece for an audition to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Music. I had always been afraid of performing solo in front of people, but this audition was important. I wanted to go to this school to major in music composition. I also thought it would be an excellent way to help me become more proficient in my playing. What I didn't realize was that performing under pressure would also make me more confident as a person.
New situations always make me at least a bit nervous, and my audition performance in front of some of the teachers at the university was no exception. I tuned my bass and warmed up my fingers with some scales and exercises. Then I paced nervously at the side of the stage waiting for the other students to finish their pieces...
