The gender role of masculinity and what is expected from
it is a topic debated in our society. What it means to be
masculine is a question that arises in this debate. In an
utopian lifestyle one's own perception should determine what
constitutes masculinity. This ideal represents a false
belief. Masculinity has certain characteristics assigned to
it by our culture.
Both men and women are led to expect that these
characteristics imply manliness and masculinity. The
progression of achieving the expectations of masculinity and
demonstrating them can be destructive to personalities and
box men into playing sterotypical roles. This progression
can also be called socialization.
The socialization of masculinity begins as early as the
first stages of infancy. The sense of who and what one
should be is the result of the collection of ideas,
attitudes, behaviors and beliefs to which he or she is
exposed...
