Atkins: Not the Only Answer!
While much can be said for the rapid weight loss rewards of the Atkins Diet, it seems to be greatly flawed. While it is based on a good foundation, it seems as outdated as any fad diet. Upon closer inspection it does not seem to be the miracle diet it claims to be. There are better diets beyond Atkins, without the rigidity or restriction I find dieters would experience with this anti-carb nightmare.
The Atkins diet is based on the theory of carbohydrate elimination. Carbs are not as easily recognizable as you may think. According to one article, they can appear in the forms of "sugars, breads, pastas, pretzels, crackers, fruit, vegetables, and soda and fruit juice". Carbs are also hidden as sugars; we may not always recognize sugar underneath its many pseudonyms: dextrose, galactose, dextrin, sorbitol, xylitol, sucrose, mannitol, sorghum, maltose, or many others (Pescatore). The effect that carbohydrates have on the body is that they "inflate appetite and foster type 2 diabetes" and carb-rich foods can also "cause extreme surges in blood sugar and insulin surges that contribute to weight gain" (Willett and Skerrett 45, 46)...
