Body Modifications: Art or Rebellion?
The history of tattooing, piercing, and scarification is a rich one. Around for thousands of years, the three have made a reemergence in today's society. Modifying of the body is a unique art form from the perspective of those who practice it, and looked upon as subversion by most who do not. Biases and opinions aside, body modification is a form of self-expression.
Art is the "human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature," as defined by dictionary.com. ("Art" Dictionary.com) Nature includes the natural form of the human body. Tongue splitting can even be called imitating nature, since we are attempting to pick up a characteristic possessed by snakes...
