A major force that is having a growing impact on society is the mass
media. The messages that are conveyed to the public through film, radio, and
television programs advocate definitions of what people should be. Every institution of society serves a particular function. Jean Kilbourne emphasizes her view on how the media degrades women and portrays them as sexual objects, leading to a low self esteem among many young girls. However, she doesn't touch on the positive aspects of advertising. Since every part of society is dependent on the other, a change in one organization would cause a change for all.
All social groups rely on each other. Therefore, each part is structured to meet society's needs. While advertising may have some downfalls, it is beneficial for society as a whole. The mass media, whether it is a radio program, magazine ad, or a television commercial, encourages Americans to purchase goods and services...
