The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about a secret love between Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmsdale. This is the time of a Puritan society where being weak and their ways are looked down upon. These two lovers were caught in a society where they love one another. The result of their sin is a baby girl who Hester Prynne names Pearl. The name Pearl has a deeper meaning and it is different from everyone else helps her in the future because of her attitude on the scaffold, it is important for the book. Pearl has a different behavior at all three scaffold scenes. Pearl is different from everyone else and its why her future was good. Pearl’s name has a different meaning and it was changing for Hester. There were only three scaffold scenes that being one of the most important scenes and for the people had Pearl, Hester, and Arthur. The first and last scaffold scene the sunshine is on both Pearl and Hester because the truth was revealed. Pearl was always in the sun because she was the truth of Hester and Dimmsdales sin, but Hester was only in the sun. The truth was revealed to the community and this is why Pearl was in the sunshine and Hester is alone and depressed without the sun. The second scaffold scene was at night, which represents being afraid unlike the other two, but Pearl fought for the truth. Pearl trys to get Dimmsdale to stand with them at the church and show the community, but what didn’t know couldn’t be spoken for. She and Hester had to wait until the last one to reveal the truth and show the community but didn’t know why it couldn’t have been spoken of. Pearl had a very hard life growing up because of her mothers sin and it made her evil. Pearl was a mean person and in a way evil to everyone. She pretended to throw her hands on Hester and she threw things at the other children. Pearl in her young life was devilish because she was the result of Hester’s sin and was evil until the truth was revealed to everyone.
