Manipulation is based on knowledge of human nature. Everyone wants to be on a winning side. For example, if a basketball player makes 1 out of 10 foul shots, but I highlight and mention the time he did get that one basket, I will give the impression that he is a better basketball player than he is. There will be people that will agree with me.
I tend not to be easily manipulated. I take a stand for what I think is right and I am not persuaded with public opinion. So, the player that did make that one basket, in my mind is a good player and I would not be persuaded to think otherwise. I usually evaluate my own image and come to conclusions hopefully for personal betterment.
