How has the JV performed to date?
The joint venture between Kasai and Banting Corp was highly successful up to Needham's arrival. JASI showed a high degree of responsiveness in quickly taking action to correct returns or problems. They adopted the Japanese concept of 'kaizen', which literally meant continuous improvement. There was an abundant workforce available that had practically no industry experience, but was keen to learn quickly under the supervision of the Japanese managers, which worked in teams and were cross-trained. JASI had a low monthly absenteeism rate of 3%, where the industry average was 5%; this was one of the key factors to the highly successful venture.
