Aboriginals occupied Australia over 50 000 years ago. When the first settlers arrived in 1788 there were many different tribes with varying dialects and traditions. The aboriginals did not cope well with the arrival of the whites. They lost their lands, which were sacred to them, and they were exposed to new diseases and violence that drastically reduced their numbers. They were treated as lee than human and were denied basic human rights. The white man stole their land and took over the running of their country. They were denied government protection and received no government assistance. Even in 1901 at the time of Federation they were hardly even mentioned-they were so unimportant. Under the constitution Australians were given the right to vote-not the aboriginals. There was this underlying belief by white Australians that they were the superior race...
