Why Sammy Quits
In his short work A & P, John Updike tells the story of a young man called Sammy. A & P is about a nineteen years old boy who is working at the A & P grocery store. The boss, Lengel, is a friend of Sammy's parents. Sammy does not seem to like his job very much. During a summer afternoon, three young, scantily clad girls come into the A & P grocery. Their style is a sharp contrast to the regular customers, because they are wearing only bathing suits. Sammy eyes the girls intently, analyzing their every move. Therefore, the boss, Mr. Lengel, catches sight of the girls as Sammy is ringing up their single purchase. Lengel says to the three girls: "Girls, this isn't the beach"...
