Rizal as A Student
As William Butler Yeats once stated, education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. Correspondingly, as Rizal read books and attended classes, knowledge inspired and awakened his patriotic side.
Education was very important and was especially valued by Rizal's family. Regardless of the rarity of books at that time, which were limited by friars to religious tracts, their abode featured a vast private library. He described his early education 'like a jar that retains the odor of the body that it first held' for it was what has shaped his habits.
Jose was such a nature-lover, intricately describing each tree and plant he could remember and admiring birds of different varieties profoundly. His aya contributed much to his imaginative thoughts, who in order to make him take supper, frightened him with stories of imaginary beings. Innocent enough to deem myths and tales, his heart and mind wandered on the wings of fantasy in the lofty regions of the unknown.
