Broad Beans
Unlike the other beans, these require a cool climate and provide meals in spring and early summer. They can withstand severe frosts. Sow from early fall to late winter.
The tall leafy bean needs plenty of room to grow. Sow seeds in rows 60-75 cm (2 to 2 1/2')apart or alternatively sow double rows 25-30 cm (10-12") apart with 75-90 cm (2 1/2 to 3') between each pair of rows. Place the seed into damp soil in a furrow 5 cm deep, spacing them 15-20 cm apart. Cover with soil and rake. Avoid watering again until seed have germinated.
Broad beans may require supporting similar to dwarf beans mentioned above.
Pick pods when young and slice them like the standard beans or leave them to mature further and shell the half-mature seeds...
