Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a significant anxiety disorder that can severely disrupt academic, social, and vocational functioning. The major feature of this disorder is recurring obsessions and compulsions that interfere with a person's life. With OCD, it is as though the brain gets stuck on a particular thought or urge and just can't let go, producing symptoms that are reported as being like a case of mental hiccups that won't go away. OCD is usually chronic, although symptoms may come and go over time. The disorder is fairly common, with a lifetime prevalence rate of approximately 2.5%. It usually develops in adolescence or early adulthood and is equally common in men and women.
