What believer would want his taxes to support an institution that prohibits his children from praying? On the other hand, what nonbeliever would want her taxes to support an institution that requires her children to participate in prayer? The separation between church and state has been an issue for decades and continues to be debated even today. Whether public school prayer should be allowed or banned is a concern that has been presented by both sides, each with valid arguments for their reasoning. This paper will portray only two of the strongest arguments from both sides in an effort to allow you to make a decision on where you might stand if faced with this issue.
First, our government is based on religious principles. The United States was established as a Christian nation with religion playing a central role in guiding the nation's destiny. Spiritual influences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our colleges began as theological seminaries.
