During this new Hebrew month of Elul, we begin the introspective work necessary to approach the holy days of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. ... Indeed, in synagogues throughout the world, the shofar is blasted every morning of Elul to wake us from our spiritual slumber and to direct us toward teshuvah (repentance).
In addition to the call for teshuvah in Elul, the rabbis offered another layer of meaning to this powerful month.
