From Revolution to the Alaska Boundary Dispute
In the winter of 1775, General Richard Montgomery led 1200 American troops up the Hudson valley and captured Montreal. A second expedition, under Benedict Arnold, headed, headed toward Quebec. The Canadians had done nothing to provoke this invasion; many of them were sympathetic to the Americans. But there were reasons for the attack; one was tactical. Earlier that year, the first shots had been fired in what would become the American Revolutionary War, and the rebellious colonists feared that Britian might use Quebec as a base from which to invade them. By moving first, they hoped to forestall such an event. The invasion indicated the direction of future developments. In any conflict between Britain and the USA, Canada would be caught in the center.

In 1776 the American revolutionary War began in earnest. Britain was tired of fighting after 6 years...
