The bass guitar is a fairly recent invention compared to many other instruments that are out there such as the guitar, drums, violin, cello, etc. But like many inventions, the bass guitar arose out of a need for it. Moreover, like many inventions, once the bass guitar was invented there were many improvements that went into it.
The problem was that the traditional stand-up bass was just not loud enough and was too big to efficiently transport from performance to performance. The bass guitar was solution to these 2 problems.
The Dilemma
The main problem was that traditional bass instruments had problems with loudness, portability, and preciseness of tone. Since all bass instruments were wood instruments, the low frequency that resonated from the strings were just not loud enough. Also, most bass instruments were huge instruments that were very inefficient to carry around. This illustrated a need for a more portable instrument. Moreover, it was very hard to maintain the correct tone and sound on a bass instrument due to the fact that it was made out of wood and could not be tuned up and maintained in a predictable manner...
