January 30, 2004 Affirmative action is a program designed to give extra opportunities to minorities that they would normally not receive. This, however, is no longer what it is. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks had their day. They stood up for what was right. But today, they would be offended because of affirmative action. Minority children go to the same public schools as white children, hand-outs at school are printed in English and Spanish. Ebonics is being taught as a foreign language in some California schools. College is a different matter. In many recent cases taken the the Supreme Court, average minorities with grade point averages in the 3.0-4.0 range are getting into college over white students with gpas in the 4.0-6.0 range.
