Once upon a time in a far away land, many
earthquakes shook the ground. Earthquakes happen
because of fault lines on the earth's crust. Earthquakes are
very short, they last less than one minute. A person who
lived through an earthquake said, "It was like riding a bike
on stairs". The power of an earthquake can be measured
on a Richter scale. If you are ever in an earthquake, the
most important thing to remember is to drop to the floor and
get under something for cover and hold on until it is over.
Earthquakes in Japan and California remind us the
earth is an active planet. Large parts of the earth's crust
called tectonic plates are about 50 miles thick. The
earth's surface is broken into seven large and many small
moving plates. Three types of movement happen at the
boundaries between plates...
