Eveline's decision to stay in Ireland was not an easy decision for her to make. Throughout the story, James Joyce showed us how depression, dependency and inertia can consume us and ultimately kill us inside. While Eveline loved Frank, there was no way for her to board the ship and sail away with him.
As the story opens, we see Eveline leaned up against the window curtains, ingesting the intoxicating scent of death, which is being forced upon her. Eveline has been isolated from reality. Her life, which has once been filled with childhood laughter, is now nothing more than adolescent lonesome. Her life is filled with no more excitement, but with responsibility. "She looked around the room which she had dusted for so many years." She could only imagine what her new life with Frank could be like. "She would be married people would treat her with respect...
