The first core class is required for Community and Environmental Planning students was CEP 301, The Idea of Community. As our CEP class started the year it was clear that understanding the University District was going to be a major part of our CEP experience. Also building a relationship with community leaders and organizations was something that we felt was an important part of being a CEP student.
Even before the 2002 juniors started its day of class, the former CEP students has discussed wanting more student involvement in the community. After many discussions and ideas, the idea through the years, include a project involving the University District community and incoming juniors became part of the curriculum. Also being established was instead of having a traditional project lasting just one quarter to extend these project to the entire first year, which includes three quarters. This was decided by students as well as instructors, they believed that this would not limit the kinds of projects that the students could participate in and hoped also in creating a greater relationship with the community.
With the idea of the juniors needing be become with the University District we were assigned several Discovery projects within our first month of the quarter. We divided into groups of three other classmates and through different projects learned more about the University District.
