Infant baptisms are celebrated and performed in many Christian communities such as, roman catholic, Methodist, Anglican, orthodox and united reformed church. The majority of Christians practice infant baptism. The central features of an infant baptism are, in many areas of the Christian church, the sprinkling of water on a baby's head, this is carried out in a font, positioned near to a door, symbolising the Christian belief that that person, once baptised enters the family of God through the waters of baptism. However, in the Orthodox Church, the young child is fully immersed in water. Also a candle is given at a baptism to symbolise Jesus, the light of the earth, coming into the life of the child. On the anniversary of the baptism, many families relight the candle. The font is also a strong symbol throughout the ceremony; it is placed near to the door of the church to symbolize the belief that the child enters the family of God through the waters of baptism. The main events of a Roman Catholic baptism are, during a service of Holy Communion, child, parents and god parents are welcomed by the priest and welcomed by the priest and asked why they have brought the child to the church, then both sets of parents and priest make the sign of the cross on the child forehead. An equally important part of an infant baptism is that of the part of godparents, as they will be, as parents, a very important feature in the child's life and also influence the child's life.
