The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was the main cause of the American Civil war. Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809, in Nolin Creek, Kentucky. His father was Thomas Lincoln, and his mother was Nancy Hanks. As a child Lincoln was described as a tall angular man had developed terrific strength. Lincoln grew up with little formal education, and self taught himself. When he was 19 he left his family in search of a better life. He moved to New Salem. He was a dedicated member to a debating club, where the townspeople came to respect him greatly. It was after getting much praise for being a quick mind, and great speaker than in 1832 declared himself a candidate for the office of State Legislature, but before he could start campaigning, he went to fight in the Black Hawk War.
