The main character in the book, Xenophon, is a Greek who as a boy lives in Athens. As a boy he is a mellow, quiet boy who was great at singing. "For he had sung already at a few of the banquets hosted by his father, attended by some of Athens' most renowned citizens and artists." In his early teens, Xenophon is trained to be a soldier like his father. After training, he joins a mercenary army led by a foreign general, Cyrus. He joins this army because his cousin, Proxenus, is a high-ranking officer in it. During the course of the trip, Proxenus, and Cyrus both die...
