Vegetation:
The tundra is the most northerly point in Canada. All the Arctic Islands are parts of the tundra. ... The climate in the Arctic Islands is very cold and dry and it makes it impossible for tree growth. However, some stunted trees and are able to grow in sheltered valleys in the Southern part of the Arctic Islands.
Soil:
The soil in the Arctic Islands is all covered by very thick ice sheets called permafrost. ... During the short summer in the Arctic Islands only the top of the permafrost can melt, and that allows some small shrubs, mosses and lichens to grow closer to the ground where they try to gain as much heat as they can from the earth, so that they survive longer.
