The development of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was a treacherous and rugged start. However, it made blacks more independent and gave them more freedom. It was a revolution that made a monstrous impact on African American religion. The AME began to develop in 1787 in Philadelphia. The AME was a movement that that resulted in the most important black denomination and arguably the most important African American institution for most of the 19th century. The AME was served as a place for social organization, economic cooperation, educational endeavor, leadership training, political articulation, and religious life. The AME movement began so African Americans could have an opportunity to freely express themselves and worship God without feeling discriminated by the white people.
