Balzac utilizes his novel Pere Goriot as a social commentary on the class distinctions and relationships between the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie in Paris during the beginning of the nineteenth century. Balzac describes the lavish lives of the wealthy and the hardships the middle class endures to achieve their dreams and goals of becoming part of the nobility. Although there are no distinct boundaries between the nobility and the middle class, the relationship between the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie is somewhat fundamental in the way that the two classes have contempt and even disdain for one another.
