Neely and Rake, Who’s Who? ... Eddie Rake was one of the most famous high school football coaches and Neely Crenshaw perhaps his most famous player. Neely is brought back to his Alma Marta because his coach is dying. ... Rake (as everyone called him) loved to coach football. ... Neely just loved to play. ... Neely’s career was ended short by a knee injury. ... Rake’s career was also cut short, not by an injury but by his nearsighted intensity. ...
Yet another similarity is that Neely and Rake were involved in a fight in the 1987 championship game. Rake was so furious, that he lost his composure and punched Neely. Neely retaliated and knocked his coach out. Neely broke his hand in the fight, but went on to lead his team to a win in the championship game, without his famed coach. ... Neely had a knee injury that left him limping and in pain for the rest of his life, even after the four surgeries he underwent. Rake was diagnosed with cancer; it would eventually prove to kill this icon.
