Abstract
The basic composition of the earth, as a whole, will be examined. This leads to an investigation of plate tectonics and basic properties of faults. Following is a description of what an earthquake is. Three separate faults of California will be looked at in more detail. The affects of two influential earthquakes in California's history are examined. Lastly, the study of earthquake prediction and how society views this research is explored.
Introduction
Earthquakes are one of this planet's most devastating natural disasters. Despite the rise in developments of earthquake prediction, this hazard continues to be a major threat to anyone near an active fault system that can produce such a disaster.
