The Crucible deals with conflicting values. Values describe our beliefs about what is valuable or important in life. Our values cause us to make judgments and decisions about how we behave and live our lives.

Keeping in mind the conflicting sets of values, the people of Salem are divided up into 2 main groups. One group consists of the people with truly noble characteristics who fall victim to corruption and evil such as John & Elizabeth Proctor and Rebecca Nurse. These people hold values such as truth, goodness, loyalty, pride & honesty and for this reason; they remain different from the majority of the society in Salem. The other group of people are the opposite who are corrupt and evil. This group includes Abigail, the Judge, Reverend Parris, the girls & the Putnams who hold the negative values of vengeance, selfishness, jealousy & greed.
