The world's forests are in big danger. Over one half of the original forests have been destroyed, and things are set to get even worse, unless some measures arte taken now.
Every minute approximately 26 ha (hectares) of forests are lost, and it's not hard to see that if that continues we will be left in a planet without woodland. This will be catastrophic: not only because of the fact that forests are home for some of the most important species on earth, but because they have a vital role in the climate regulating process, and this makes the planet habitable.
Trees once covered almost all of the earth, but almost all of them were cleared very long ago, in order for population to be able to expand. These expansions took place mostly on places with temperate climates like, Britain, and other parts in Europe, where agriculture was indispensable.
But it's only until recent times that the tropical forests have come under severe attack. Worldwide there was twice as much tropical forests in the 1900's as what there is nowadays, only 700 million ha remain from the original 1.5 billion ha.
