There are 3 million reported causes of child abuse, involving more than 4 million children, in the U.S. each year. (Vanderbilt) More than 2,000 American children die from abuse each year, most of them are 3 years or younger. One in every 20 homicide victims is a child. In 3 of 4 abuse cases, the abuser is a parent of the abused child.
There is no commonly accepted definition of child abuse and neglect. The term "child abuse and neglect" means, at a minimum, any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act of failure to act which presents an imminent risk or serious harm.
