Mary Cassatt was an American figure painter and etcher. She was born in Pittsburgh in 1844. Most of her life was spent in France, where she was greatly influenced by her great French contemporaries. Motherhood paintings were Cassatt's most frequent subject. Her pictures are notable for their refreshing plainness, energetic treatment, and pleasing color. She excelled also as a pastelist and etcher, and her drypoints and color prints are greatly admired. She is well represented in public and private galleries in the United States. Her best-known pictures are Mother and child (1901), and Modern Women. These pieces of art reflect the era she was in by showing that this was the era when women were the house wife's and stayed home to take care of their children.
